Tips on managing back pain

Monday morning – I woke up – brushed my teeth and sneezed. Ping! Backs gone! Was hobbling around like a donkey. Walked it off – a bit of ice and got to my Pilates classes.

This is no new occurrence for me. But I also don’t use it as an excuse to stop my exercise routine. Here’s a few tips for you if you are managing back pain and still want to exercise…

  1. Consult a professional: Before starting any exercise regimen, consult with a healthcare professional or physical therapist to get personalised advice based on your specific back condition.
  2. Low-impact activities: Choose low-impact exercises like walking, swimming, or stationary cycling to reduce strain on your back while still staying active.
  3. Core strengthening: Focus on exercises that strengthen your core muscles, as they provide support to the spine. Gentle exercises like pelvic tilts or modified planks can be effective.
  4. Stretching: Incorporate gentle stretching into your routine to improve flexibility and reduce muscle tension. Avoid overstretching, and listen to your body to avoid exacerbating your back issues.
  5. Gradual progression: Start slowly and gradually increase the intensity and duration of your workouts. Avoid sudden, jarring movements and pay attention to any discomfort, adjusting your routine accordingly.
